Why I became a Scientist

Growing up in Southern California earthquakes were the norm, yet a mystery to everyone around me. So at a very young age, my curiosity was stirred. As a child, my father would take us out on day trips to places like Mormon Rock and Devil's Punchbowl near the San Andreas Fault, where the tilted strata left you wondering how layers so perfect could be so imperfect. Early in school I remember having exposure to programs brought to school by NASA. I fondly recall many of the space missions even the tragic Challenger shuttle mishap. My sister had talked about how they were going to watch it in class the whole week leading up to the tragedy. Later in high school I encountered great teachers like Mr. Fuqua, who taught us chemical reactions and energy transfer with simple rockets made from matches and foil. Again the spark was ignited. Chemistry with Mr. Hudson although a challenge was also interesting and the interest for more answers never stopped. I eventually finished that part of school but as I went onto serving as a Marine and traveled the world more curiosity was stirred. That lead me to seek a degree in Geology. After many challenges I accomplished my degree in summer 2021. I was lucky enough to complete field work in the Southwest United States conducting investigations through California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada under the direction of some of the best in the industry.
